Moto Goodness

GOODNESS-as defined by the Random House Dictionary: excellence of quality; goodness of workmanship; the best of anything; essence; strength. To be forthright, it's only been in recent years that this obsession of "MOTO" has truly manifest, but the love is genuine. Motorbikes, Aeroplanes, Automobiles and all that is designed, built and driven to perform is appreciated.

Star Trek & Sci Fi

STAR TREK (The Original Series) was the beginning of a life-long, love of Science Fiction and Science Fact and all other things of a Fantastic Nature. Whether it was Comic Books, Live-Action Television, Motion Pictures or Animated Cartoons, the media did not matter, as long as it was a means to transverse space and time ... or alter reality.

Hammer of the Gods

THE HAMMER OF THE GODS A metaphor for music, how it can forge, shape and mold our lives. A means to transport and transform. I'm not a musical scholar or theorist. Simply, someone who has played and listened to quite a bit of music.  Just a bloke who knows what he likes and dislikes. Also, I'm a bass player, so expect a lot of attention paid to the bottom end!

Electrical Guitar Company

Oh! Glory Vintage: Repurposed & Upcycled Furnishings & Vintage Clothing

I first met Jeff White online over on the Chop Cult forum, I had posted asking if anyone local was doing the Revenge Run ( inaugural year). Jeff replied, he and his Peanut City Geeks crew were headed out for it, and to hit him up with a personal message if wanted to tag along. So I did just that, and had a blast. On the ferry ride from Ocracoke, I was chatting with J. White and turns out we had a bit in common. Moto, being the obvious, but he is a graphic artist and plays bass as well. So yeah, I thought he was pretty stand up guy from the get go. Over the past couple of years, we've ridden together a few more times and I've run into him and his charming southern belle/missus, Jessica, out and about from time to time. Anyway, let's skip to the present, we became "friends" again on FB, and I was stalking over his profile, I saw that he was listed as Co-Proprietor (with his wife) at Oh! Glory Vintage, mmmm, what's this? went wandering...

Wow, I was treated to some rather eclectic and rustic and down right tasty pieces of Americana that had been re visioned in the hands of these two artisans! It takes a gifted eye to see worth in what has been  discarded and forgotten and even more so, skilled hands to transform that, into something engaging and useful. At first glance, some may look at a few of the pieces an say "I could have done that", well the fact is, you didn't, and they did!  So check their stuff out, for now, they are web-based, but hope to have a brick and mortar store front one day. If that day can't come soon enough for you, stop by and see them at the ETC Indie Art & Music Festival Sept 8 at Town Point park. With that being said, I salute Oh! Glory Vintage, outstanding work!!

In the spirit of the cafe racer and scooter culture of 1950's through 1970's England. Many vintage as well as modern retro bikes and scooters will be on display to the public. Several rides will showcase the fact that these machines are all ridden - no trailer queens! Stylish vintage bikes and scooters as well as great music, food drink and fun. Jenn, Joe and myself will be riding down for this one. I'm stoked!!!

Here a some random photos from 2010 and 2009 when Jenn and I attended. Unfortunately, missed last year, so I think we all need to make up for it by having super-duper extra fun!!

David William Sims: The Jesus Lizard

Somewhere in 1989, Matthew Odietus (RIP) comes over to my place with the latest issue of Maximum RockNRoll. He's all excited about an article on a band called, The Jesus Lizard. At first I thought, oh, they are trying to be shocking by putting "Jesus" in their name, but Matt explains to me what a Jesus Lizard is, they are these crazy little reptiles that walk across water, neato. He's reading me the article, and showing my the photos, one in particular, depicting the vocalist holding his testicles clenched in fist, with the microphone in his other hand held down at his groin. We found that one rather amusing. After a bit more of the article, I realize the bass player is David Wm. Sims, from Rapeman (Steve Albini's band after Big Black) and Scratch Acid prior to that. Anyway, turns out this band was playing the King's Head Inn soon, so we decide then, that we have to check it out.

I picked up their first EP "Pure" prior to seeing them live. Initially, I thought it was just "Ok". Because they used a drum machine and it was produced by Albini, it was hard not to write them off as Big Black wannabes. That all changed after seeing this rock and roll juggernaut perform live at KHI on a Tuesday night to an audience of maybe seven to nine individuals. In attendance, if memory serves me well, Matthew and myself, Micheal Dayve, Stan Boyette, Rich Schellenberger, Steve Loschi, Brian Pafumi some chick named Nancy and the dude she was with. Plus, doing sound, Bob Gurske (RIP) and working the bar and door,George and Shirley. By this time, the band had employed the powerhouse, living metronome Mac McNielly on drums. With the addition of a live drummer, this allowed David Wm. Sims crunchy, mid-range bass tone to really come alive. In addition to his bass tone standing out, his physical appearance at the time was rather stunning. He had long wavy hair dyed some reddish hue of Manic Panic with steelish-blue eyes that peered out between locks of his mane.

Flat Tyre: Team Camp Sleep to the Rescue!

Headed home from work on Monday evening with dinner plans with Jenn, Joe and Raven at Camp Sleep. Suddenly, I have a slight wobble in my rear end, wobble becomes more pronounced and there is no shoulder to pull over on. Eventually, teeter my way into the drive way of the FAA Control Tower at Norfolk International Airport.

I navigate off of the road, bring my motorbike to a somewhat shaky, but overall gentle stop. My rear tyre is flat. Propped her up on the center stand to examine the back tyre, seems that a razor blade has lodged itself into the rubber and ultimately penetrating and puncturing my inner tube ( it's a vintage bike, running vintage reproduction tyres, utilizing....inner tubes).
